Max’s 30 Day Raw Milk Diet Week 1

Many of you know Max the Beagle. He has been working at Lovable Pets since we first opened our doors 14 years ago. In early April 2020, Max was facing a real health challenge.

The symptoms

  • Stiffness and pain in muscles and legs
  • Shivering
  • Weakness
  • Depression
  • Lack of appetite
  • Swelling of the mucous membrane
  • Swelling of the lymph nodes in his neck (as big as my fist!)

The Diagnosis

After several blood tests in which everything looked normal, we had a special test sent to Colorado State University, which also came back “inconclusive.” We switched vets and after looking closely at all his symptoms, the new vet diagnosed Max with Leptospirosis.

Dogs can contract the Leptospira bacteria through direct contact with another infected animal, by eating infected meat, or most commonly, through contact with anything that has been contaminated by the urine of an infected animal. Most infections occur when dogs go swimming in and/or drink infected water, but anything (plants, dirt, objects, or water) can be a potential source of infection. Well, he’s a typical beagle…nose to the ground and always finding a dead carcass to eat down by the river.

The Initial Treatment:

Max’s symptoms were not getting better on antibiotics (and we tried several!) In fact, they were getting worse.

I pulled him off the antibiotics and decided to try a more natural approach. He started a homeopathic treatment, and for the first time started to improve some, but not totally.  At around this same time he started to have an anal gland infection, which abscessed a few times. Antibiotics were not working for him, so once again, I decided to try a more natural route.

The 30-Day Raw Milk Diet:

Answer’s Pet Food has a holistic veterinarian on staff who has come up with specialized diets for specific health problems. They suggest a 30-day Raw Milk Diet for dogs with blood infections, like Max.

Answers’ 2020 Health Guide for dogs lists the benefits of using Raw Cow Kefir and Raw Goat’s Milk in combination. Together they are a complete, easily-digestible diet that:

  • Boosts the immune system
  • Cleans the blood
  • Provides antioxidants, vital enzymes, vitamins, and minerals
  • Reduces inflammation
  • & more!

This combination is recommended for detoxification and boosting the immune system to fight off infection.

On June 12th Max started his raw milk diet. I will be reporting his progress here.

WEEK 1:

A.M.

  • 1 Cup Answer’s Raw Goat Milk
  • 1/2 Cup Answer’s Raw Cow Kefir

P.M.

  • 1 Cup Answer’s Raw Goat Milk
  • 1/2 Cup Answer’s Raw Cow Kefir

Notes:

Max doesn’t like goat’s milk on a good day, so it was going to be a challenge to offer that as his only food.

The diet starts with a 24-hour fast, so by the next day he was very hungry which made it easier for him to get started. I mixed a tiny bit of Nature’s Logic canned food with it and Max ate his breakfast right up.

By day four he was looking forward to his meals and drinking all his milk.

His energy level is better than it has been for a while. Though we have just started, I’m already starting to see some small improvements in his overall demeanor.

His anal gland infection is still present. I will give you an update next week.
